The weather is great, it’s almost springtime, and I’m ready to take this show on the road! I’ve always wanted to travel and do art shows. I’ve decided to start closer to home and work my way out. I’ve been accepted into The Pecan Street Festival in Austin, May 1-2, 2010! I’m looking at tents, tables, and display items to go with my art. It seems more complicated than just picking up a tent and setting it up. I never thought about what happens in a wind gust or the rain. Would the tent stand up or blow away? Would it ruin my work or destroy someone else’s expensive art? Can I set the tent up myself? So many questions to answer, so little time before the show deadlines. I think it will be nice to meet new kindred spirits, so here I come!

Tithing is a part of my life. I’ve found I enjoy giving more than receiving. I lived in Dripping Springs when the community was building a library, museum, and the schools were growing like crazy. When my daughter’s were young I spent hours in their school working with other parents to improve and enrich the experience. The community gathered together to raise money to fund these projects. You make lasting friends while serving others together.

When my youngest started high school she played tennis at a special place, Austin Tennis Academy. Austin Tennis Academy (ATA) has pledged to raise one million dollars for A Glimmer of Hope in 20 years. Through my involvement with ATA I learned about A Glimmer of Hope. What I like about Glimmer is 100% of your donation is used to help fund projects in Ethiopia. It was heart breaking to see such poverty and impossible not to be affected by it. I was especially touched by the difficult chore of women and children carrying water for miles everyday. The water they traveled so far to collect was also dirty water, causing disease. A Glimmer of Hope has funded the building of over 3,500 wells to date! Having clean water that is close has changed the dynamics of their daily life. Women can now spend their time growing gardens to feed their families and their children now attend schools built by Glimmer.

My dream is to fund a well in honor of all the women in my family. We’ve funded the first of what I hope are many wells to come. I hope you’ll join me.

Read about Glimmer of Hope in the Austin-American Statesman.

My summer started out great with a fabulous trip to Peru and hiking the challenging Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Soon after my return I had the bad fortune of breaking my wrist. I didn’t just break it as my Doctor said, I smashed it. When these things happen you don’t think that there’s a chance you might not recover the use of your hand. It was a most humbling experience. I had to be dressed and my hair had to be combed by someone. The clichés you hear about hurting down to the bone are true! After two weeks of wearing a cast from my fingertips to under my armpit, it was put back together with 2 plates, 6 screws and a bone graph. I was lucky to have a surgeon that didn’t use a cast after surgery and was so skilled. I was able to start physical therapy one week after surgery, which leads to a quicker recovery of skills. Once I started therapy I realized how lucky I am. I know I am truly blessed to have 99% function of my hand. My hands are how I work and it is a two handed world. This has given me a chance to reflect on those who tackle the world w/ disabilities everyday. It’s made me grateful.

I recently discovered 2 strands of unique beads. One strand was Mali Dutch Donuts from the 1500’s-1700. They are an intense cobalt blue. The other strand was African Trade Beads from the 1500’s. These large glass beads are bright turquoise. I decided to design a collection around them using leather and copper. I felt pearls would also add interest. I choose some large, white 14mm round ones. I was so pleased how the beads came together. I’ve really enjoyed working with the leather and copper wrapping. The collection has a Nuevo Southwestern feel to it. I hope you’ll check my newest collection as well as my entire line at www.clarityartstudio.com.

Having worked most of my life w/ my hands, I decided to try jewelry making. It started when I broke a favorite bracelet. Finding I really enjoyed making jewelry, I started making custom pieces for friends. They sent me referrals and it took off! I do all the work myself from selecting the semi-precious stones and findings to creating the finished piece. I design and sell my jewelry on my website and at art shows.

One of the other things I do w/ older jewelry pieces is update and re-create them. I recently took an old charm bracelet and made 3 necklaces for a client. Each charm had special meaning for the recipient.

I am a native Texan. I grew up wearing handmade dresses my Mother and Grandmother made each year before school. They were so talented w/ their hands and generous w/ their time. I learned early how to make my own gifts and experiment in the arts and crafts. I spent a summer in Abilene w/ my Grandmother learning how to sew. One of my favorite dress designers back then was Betsy Johnson.

My earliest gift was a camera. I shot rolls and rolls of B & W film. A favorite subject was the outdoors. Since I was a child I always loved the outdoors. My family took long trips every summer mostly to the mountains. We had a pop-up camper and spent lots of time in the wilderness and National Parks. It was wonderful to spend time in the quiet, surrounded by nature. I learned to observe and became inquisitive. Nature influenced how I look at life. I’ve grown gardens that fed my family. I enjoy working outdoors and caring for my plants. I have always loved the outdoors. I am a Country Lady.

I’ve lived an unusual life. Setting out after college to live on the land I bought a raw piece of land and moved on it. There was no electricity, no running water, and no house. It took months to get the power out to the land. It was also the coldest winter on record. I decided hot water is the best modern convenience. I cooked meals on the daily built fire pit. Everything was smoked or covered in foil and steamed. I lived in a tent for over a year. Nothing helps you see details like living outside. My roots are in the earth.

I love cooking and have spent time in several restaurant kitchens. It was in 1974 working at Shenanigans’ (next to Pelican’s Wharf) that I had a 15 minute stained glass demonstration from a co-worker. I had discovered stain glass on a ski trip to Aspen earlier that year. I was seduced. This started my love affair with stained glass. I read everything I could about stained glass and the glass movement. I started experimenting with etching, laminating, kiln working, and beveling. I designed a line of kiln fired jewelry.
